At the beginning of this year’s NCAA competition, may any person have predicted this would be the Final Four that we were to get? None of the leading seed made it to Houston, whereas among the 1st Four – genuinely meaning among the last 4 picked for the competition whatsoever – has made it. It will be an unanticipated if a single bracket all through the country was still intact following this past weekend.
Who may have predicted that among the national semifinals matches would be competed between the Bulldogs and the VCU Rams? Few enough folks supposed Butler to make it back into the Sweet Sixteen, let alone the Final Four. And nobody genuinely supposed VCU to make their incredible run in the competition, beating out No. 1 seed Kansas on the way.
So is this year just random chance, or is the era of being able to forecast relatively accurate national championships coming to an end? In essence, the lesser schools are attracting quality participants, and those participants stick around for longer than the minimum amount of time necessary to make a name for themselves before declaring for the nba Draft.
Programs like Butler and VCU can attract quality participants, even if they do not get the pretty top high school participants in the country. The big names like Kansas and Ohio State can acquire the top of the top, but then those participants just stay in college for a year or two at the most. In the meantime, the lesser schools take advantage and create their participants for 3-4 years.
So the upsets we are seeing this year are not flukes. They reflect the changing perception of the value of competing college ball. None of the leading seeds lasted long enough to make it to Houston’s semifinal round. Duke is gone, Kansas is gone, the broadly liked Ohio State is gone. Butler, VUC, Kentucky, and Uconn make up just the 3rd Final Four without a No. 1 seed since 1979.
The big conferences were humiliated from the competition this year. The Big East and Big Ten got a combined 18 bids this year, and just one team made it even as far as the Elite Eight – Connecticut. Look for the lesser conferences and lesser programs to start gaining more competition bids in the long run. And watch for them to keep winning so long as the “elite” schools recruit talent at the expense of regularity.
